AP Fills In the Gap: Georgia To Blame

The Associated Press reported “The warfare began Aug. 7 when Georgia launched a barrage targeting South Ossetia.” The media is wrong to claim Georgia started the fight, however. Former European Commission official Patrick Worms and author/ academic Thomas Goltz insist Ossetians fired the first shots on Georgian peacekeepers and Russian troops already mobilized, as if they somehow predicted a response, pounced when Georgia responded. The reasons why are particularly interesting.

Whether or not this is true, there is no way AP can know that warfare began only after Georgia launched a barrage. Russia has money and with money comes media pull.
