OpEdNews Publishes Hateful Lies About Mormons

Opednews.com starts with the usual lie that the "Church of Latter Day Saints backed the anti-Gay Marriage Proposition 8 in California with out-of-state funds." This is false. The money was given by people who happened to be Mormon, not by the church itself, and there is no evidence that they are out of state.

After lamenting Republicans' "heartbreaking victory," Op Ed News launches into a disgusting, illogical comparison of the civil rights struggle in the seventies and the gays' current struggle against "hamlets of homophobia." They report "The Mormon religion at the time taught that blacks could not attain to [sic] the priesthood, and that they were tainted by the curse of Ham, a biblical figure." This is false. The Mormon church never said that blacks had the curse of Ham, though wikipedia and other lying media claim this.

The straw man logical fallacy continues as OpEdNews claims the proclamation that blacks could receive the priesthood was a "new revelation came to the Book of Mormon." It has since been edited out, but I noted on wikipedia that the Book of Mormon prophesied that every male would get to receive the priesthood. It wasn't some new thing the church did out of pressure. It was always there, this was nothing new.

OpEdnews says this amounted to calling blacks "now human in the eyes of the Church." Not allowing someone to have the priesthood is calling them inhuman? Are women considered inhuman then? Ridiculous strawman argument. After quoting Brigham Young out of context, oped effectively calls for a sports boycott of the Mormon church.

Is this bigoted pack of lies is something only jocks could be fooled by?
